Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will have an important meeting with his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang tomorrow (Friday) in Russian city Sochi where the two will be together to attend the 16th meeting of the council of the heads of government (CHG) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Abbasi will also have a meeting with host Russian Prime Minister DA Medvedev who has invited prime minister of Pakistan and other six member countries to participate in the huddle that will continue for two days.

The sources in the Foreign Office told here Wednesday evening that the meetings will take place on fringes of the CHG encounter as he will avail the opportunity for meeting with some other heads of member countries governments. India is also the member of the SCO but it will be having exception since its Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not turn up for the significant meeting. It appears to be a diplomatic move by New Delhi because the United States is allergic to the SCO which is viewed as emerging global powerful group that could challenge US supremacy in the international affairs.

India is out to please Washington through every trick of the game. Indian minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj will lead Indian delegation and it is unlikely that prime minister of Pakistan will meet her, the sources added.

Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua will accompany Prime Minister Abbasi in sojourn to the picturesque Russian city that will host a number of international events down the line in coming months. It is understood that Ms. Tehmina Janjua will have formal shake hands in one of the meetings of the officials with Indian External affairs minister.

The sources pointed out that the meetings of Prime Minister Shahid Abbasi with his Chinese and Russian counterparts will carry conspicuous importance in the wake of major shuffle in Pakistan’s foreign policy that envisages mark improvement in ties with the two countries and other members of the SCO.

The sources hinted that pace of work on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) would figure prominently in deliberations with leaders attending the conference including Chinese premier. The CPEC is viewed as fate changer for the region and China has officially termed it as a flagship project of its global initiative of ‘One Belt One Road’ (OBOR). Most of the countries of the SCO come in the preview of the OBOR.

It has been officially announced here that Prime Minster Abbasi will participate in the huddle that has been slated for November 30th and December 1. It is the first SCO heads of government meeting that Pakistan will participate in after assumption of full membership in June this year.

The meeting is mandated to focus on the strategy, prospects, and priorities for SCO’s developmental cooperation. The SCO now comprises 8 member states: Pakistan, China, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. It has four observer states Iran, Afghanistan, Belarus and Mongolia and six dialogue partners: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Turkey.

The SCO objectives include building mutual trust, equality, respect for cultural diversity and good-neighborly relations. It aims to promote effective cooperation in the areas of political, security, trade, economy and social sectors.

SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) contributes towards regional peace, security, and stability. Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will participate in the SCO Retreat being hosted by the Russian prime minister with his other SCO counterparts. The Retreat will be followed by a Plenary Session of the Council of Heads of Government where prime minister will deliver a statement.

At the plenary, the prime minister will outline Pakistan’s commitment to SCO’s objectives including fighting terrorism and extremism and its sincere interest in regional peace, stability, and development.

The meeting will close on a signing ceremony of decisions and Joint Communiqué by the heads of delegations. The prime minister will also hold important bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, the official announcement added.
